Why Do Identical RJ45 Connectors Vary in Cost? 4 Key Factors.
It is not uncommon to see significant price differences for RJ45 connectors that look identical and share the same specifications. Many buyers find this confusing. In reality, the price variation largely comes down to differences in raw materials, manufacturing processes, and internal design. As a professional manufacturer of network transformers and RJ45 connectors, we have identified four core factors that explain these price gaps.
1. Plastic Housing Material
The outer shell of an RJ45 connector is injection-molded using modified polyester and glass fiber. Common materials include PBT, PA46, PA66, PA9T, and LCP. These materials vary greatly in heat resistance, flame retardancy, insulation, and anti-aging performance. Higher-grade materials cost more but deliver stable performance under tough conditions, while lower-cost plastics are only suitable for basic indoor use. The choice of material directly sets the base price level of the finished product.
2. Shielding Shell Composition
Although the outer appearance may be the same, the shielding shell can be made from different base materials—such as bronze, stainless steel, stainless iron, or tin-plated iron. High-quality bronze and stainless steel shells offer excellent protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and corrosion, ensuring stable signal transmission. In contrast, cheap iron shells provide poor shielding and are prone to rust and contact failure over time, leading to a clear price gap.
3. Pin Material and Gold Plating Thickness
The pin material and gold plating thickness are critical to both quality and cost. Pins are typically made of phosphor bronze, then plated with a nickel underlayer and a gold coating. As gold prices fluctuate, different plating thicknesses result in large cost differences. Thicker gold plating ensures excellent conductivity, wear resistance, and oxidation protection—even under frequent plugging and unplugging. Products with thin gold plating are cheaper, but they are more likely to cause unstable network connections.
4. LED Indicator Quality
Even when the LED indicators look the same, they can differ in service life and voltage tolerance. Low-quality LEDs are prone to early failure or malfunction. High-quality indicators clearly show the operating status and maintain stable performance over the long term. These differences in auxiliary components also contribute to uneven pricing.
Conclusion
In short, the price differences among same-model RJ45 connectors come down to material grades and production standards. Low-priced products may only meet basic usage needs, while high-quality connectors are better suited for industrial equipment, security monitoring systems, and network switches—where reliable operation is critical.
